Week Without Violence: YWCA Red Sand Project

The YWCA’s “Week Without Violence” (October 14-October 18) is a national movement working toward ending violence against girls and women; bringing awareness to the growth in human trafficking. The YWCA is asking for the participation of citizens and allies through the “Red Sand Project,” an art instillation which involves filling a crack on the street with red sand as a symbol of support.

Here are the instructions that are listed on the YWCA website:

  1. Fill a sidewalk crack outside your building with red sand;

  2. Snap a photo with your phone or tablet;

  3. Share your photo on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using the hashtags #RedSandProject, #YWCA, & #WeekWithoutViolence; and tagging YWCA Lancaster: @YWCALancaster. If you don’t have a social media account, please email your picture to

  4. bleffler@ywcalancaster.org and we will happily post your image on our own social media page to recognize your partnership.

    To receive a bag of sand, fill out the form on their website.
